Frank Lampard insists Chelsea can win the Premier League title if they triumph in remaining fixtures
Frank Lampard believes Chelsea will have a great shot of retaining their Premier League crown if they can win all of their remaining fixtures but insists any assault on the title is going to be difficult.
The midfielder netted twice as Carlo Ancelotti's men saw off a plucky Blackpool side in typically hostile Bloomfield Road surroundings and the 32-year-old admitted it was nice to be able to look up the table rather than sideways.
Asked if he still believed Chelsea could lift the title, Lampard told Sky Sports: “Of course, you have to believe. It’s a long shot, we have given ourselves a lot to do and Manchester United and Arsenal are very good teams and they’ve got a bit of a gap but with the quality we’ve got we can only look at our own games.
“If we go and win every game then we’ve got a great chance to do it but it’s going to be very difficult.
“It’s just nice to be looking upwards rather than looking to fight into the top four. We still have to battle to make sure we do that but we have a bit of a different eye now, looking above us rather than sideways so it was a good week.”
Chelsea’s victory takes them three points clear of Tottenham in the rac
e for Champions League qualification and nine points behind Manchester United with one game in hand. Despite the relevant comfort of a 3-1 margin, the England man thought his side were guilty of making hard work of the seaside task.
“They gave us a great game and at times we were a bit sloppy and gave them chance to get back in the game but luckily with a bit of quality at times we won it,” added Lampard.
“I don’t think we were at our best today, on times we were a bit sloppy and we can’t afford to do that because if we are to do anything this season we need to go and win basically all our games.”
A blot on the Chelsea copy book for the evening was an injury to Didier Drogba but replacement Salomon Kalou delivered two killer blows to home supporters, first when felled for a penalty and later a cute assist for Lampard’s second. A telling contribution which did not go unnoticed by his grateful team-mate.
Quizzed on Kalou’s contribution, Lampard said: “Massive, he came on and there was constant movement causing problems, coming a bit deeper, going in behind them, everything. Credit to Sala because when you’re not playing all the time you get frustrated and he deserves to play for what he gives every time he comes on or starts is massive for the team.”
The Ivorian admitted he finds his role as a frequent impact substitute is sometimes burdening and hopes to soon get a chance to contribute from the start.
Kalou said: “It is difficult because you don’t play for a long and when you get in a game people expect you to make the difference always but sometimes it is difficult. I’m working hard at training and there are players to help me at training so I give always my best and hopefully my time will come and I’ll be in the first eleven.”
